Does More RAM Mean Better Performance?

RAM is one of the most misunderstood parts of a computer. People know that it’s important, but they often aren’t sure how it actually affects their PC’s performance.

Here at Computer Repair Adelaide, we get asked about RAM all the time. Will more RAM make my computer faster? Is 16GB the new standard? Will upgrading get me more FPS in my games?

In this guide, we’ll give you straight, simple answers to these questions based on our hands-on experience helping customers every day.

What is RAM?

The easiest way to think about RAM (Random Access Memory) is as your computer’s short-term memory.

Your hard drive is its long-term memory, where everything is stored permanently. When you open a program like a web browser, your computer pulls it from long-term storage and puts it into its short-term memory (RAM) so it can be accessed quickly.

The more RAM you have, the more things your computer can think about at once.

So, does having more short-term memory make your computer faster?

Yes, but only if it needs it. If you’re only asking your computer to do one or two things, having lots of extra memory doesn’t make it think any faster. But if you ask it to do twenty things at once and it runs out of short-term memory, it has to constantly go back to the slow long-term storage to retrieve information. This is what causes slowdowns.

More RAM does not automatically mean higher performance. More RAM only helps when your current amount is full. It prevents the slowdown that happens when your computer’s short-term memory gets overloaded.

Is 16GB of RAM Worth It Over 8GB in 2025?

This is one of the most common questions we get, especially from people buying a new computer or thinking about an upgrade. The old advice that “8GB is plenty” is no longer true for most people, and the demands of Windows 11 are a big reason why.

What 8GB of RAM Gets You Today

Think of 8GB of RAM as the new bare minimum for a Windows 11 computer. Windows 11 itself uses more memory just to run than Windows 10 did. So with 8GB, you can do one or two things at a time, like browsing a few websites or working on a single document.

But as soon as you start to multitask like a modern computer user, you will feel the system start to struggle. If you have lots of browser tabs open while also running a programme like Microsoft Teams or Spotify in the background, your computer has to work hard to manage its limited memory. This is what causes that frustrating lag when you switch between applications.

Why 16GB is the New Standard

This is what we recommend as the “sweet spot” for most of our customers using a modern setup. Having 16GB of RAM gives your computer the breathing room it needs to handle Windows 11 and everyday multitasking without breaking a sweat.

With 16GB, you can have twenty browser tabs open, stream music, and work on a large spreadsheet all at the same time, and your computer will still feel quick and responsive. It’s enough for all office work, heavy web browsing, and for playing most modern games smoothly.

Our Verdict

For almost everyone using Windows 11, the answer is yes. Moving from 8GB to 16GB is the single most noticeable and best value upgrade you can make for your computer’s day-to-day performance. The difference in how responsive your computer feels is significant.

Does 32GB of RAM Give More FPS in Gaming Than 16GB?

This is a specific question we get from gamers who want the best performance.

For most games you play today, the answer is no. Moving from 16GB to 32GB will usually give you no noticeable increase in your FPS (Frames Per Second).

Your FPS is primarily determined by your graphics card (GPU) and your processor (CPU). As long as you have enough RAM for the game to load its files, which is usually 16GB, any extra capacity does not make the game run faster.

There are a few important exceptions where 32GB is a good idea.

  • Future-Proofing: For a brand new, high-end gaming PC, choosing 32GB is a smart move for future games.
  • Demanding Games: A small number of huge simulation games like Microsoft Flight Simulator can use more than 16GB and will run smoother with 32GB.
  • Streaming: If you stream your gameplay on a platform like Twitch, the extra RAM is essential for the streaming software to run well alongside your game

Is 32GB of RAM Overkill for a Normal PC?

While 32GB of RAM has its uses for high-end gaming and streaming, it is not necessary for most other tasks.

For a normal PC that is used for web browsing, email, and Microsoft Office, yes, it is generally overkill.

You would be paying for a large amount of extra memory that your daily applications will simply never use. It is an extra expense that will provide no noticeable benefit to your computer’s performance. Sticking with 16GB is a much better use of your budget.

The people who do need 32GB are typically professionals who use their computers for very demanding work. This includes:

  • Video editors working with high-resolution 4K or 8K footage.
  • 3D artists and animators rendering complex scenes.
  • Programmers and engineers running multiple virtual machines or compiling large, complex codebases.

For these users, the extra RAM is an essential tool. For everyone else, it is a purchase you can safely skip.

The Risks of Upgrading Bigger RAM

Before you buy new RAM, it’s important to understand the risks. You can’t just put any RAM stick into any computer.

What happens if I install the wrong amount or speed?

Every computer motherboard has a maximum amount and speed of RAM it supports.

  • If you install more RAM than it can handle, your computer will likely just ignore the extra amount. For example, if the limit is 32GB and you install 64GB, it will only use 32GB. In some cases, the computer may not start at all.
  • If you install faster RAM than it can handle, the new RAM will simply run at the slower speed your motherboard supports. You will not get the speed you paid for.

Can I mix different sizes of RAM, like 8GB and 16GB?

This is a very common question, and while it can sometimes work, we strongly advise against it.

When you mix RAM sticks of different sizes (like an 8GB stick with a 16GB stick) or different speeds, you lose the benefit of “dual-channel” mode. This is a feature that allows the computer to talk to both RAM sticks at the same time, which makes your system significantly faster and more stable.

If you install mismatched sticks, your computer will be forced to run in the slower “single-channel” mode. It can also cause unexpected system crashes and instability. For a reliable and fast computer, you should always install in matching pairs.

Our Final Advice on RAM and Performance

So, what does this all mean for you? Here are the most important takeaways from our experience.

For most people using a modern computer for daily tasks, 16GB of RAM is the sweet spot. It provides the best performance for the price.

For gamers, remember that more RAM does not equal more FPS. Your graphics card (GPU) is a much more important investment for improving gaming performance.

And finally, choosing the right amount and speed of RAM for your specific computer can be confusing. It’s important to get parts that are fully compatible with your system to avoid wasting money or causing instability.
